How to choose a bicycle helmet for a child?
Types of bicycle helmets
There are three basic types of bicycle helmets: recreational, road, and mountain. Such a helmet should provide comfort and safety during cycling trips on both urban bike paths and dirt roads. The most popular helmet for children is the recreational helmet (also known as the "peanut"), which is also the most versatile.
The structure of the helmet shell (it matters), i.e. EPS and ABS.
The cheapest children's bike helmets are made of EPS material, or... Styrofoam. Instead of a strong outer shell, they are usually covered with heat-shrinkable foil with a colorful print. These helmets are the simplest form of protection against head injuries. The popularity of this type of helmet is based primarily on their low price and eye-catching colors. Due to their construction, such helmets are usually very lightweight. The disadvantage is their susceptibility to deformation.
Slightly more expensive but much more durable, children's helmets are made from a combination of EPS and ABS. The outer shell of such a helmet is made of ABS, which is highly impact-resistant. The inner EPS shell acts as a shock absorber in the event of a crash. The advantage of helmets made from a combination of EPS and ABS is that they provide a high level of head protection when riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard. This type of helmet is also suitable for roller skates or inline skates, providing protection for the back of the head in the event of a backward fall. Additionally, the outer shell protects the inner shell from damage, such as dents. The type of helmet described above is suitable for both girls and boys.
Equipment elements
Depending on the manufacturer and model, you can find helmets with different equipment.
Adjusting the circuit head allows the helmet to fit properly to the child's head.
Strap clasp with regulation. It can be with a traditional buckle/latch or with a magnetic clip . For children, a magnetic clip seems to be a better choice due to the lower risk of skin entrapment.
Soft lining It increases helmet comfort on longer rides. Typically attached to the inside of the helmet with Velcro, it can be removed and washed.
Some helmets are equipped with a lamp LED glowing red light, integrated into the helmet shell or head circumference adjustment knob. This solution significantly increases visibility on the road.

What is worth paying attention to?
- Before purchasing a helmet, measure the circumference of your child's head. Child helmet sizes are usually given on a scale of XS/S/M and in centimeters. Only a properly fitting helmet will provide head protection in the event of a crash!
- To provide adequate protection, a helmet must fit your child's head properly. Both the head circumference adjustment and the chin strap must be adjusted to prevent loosening on your child's head. The helmet must be securely fastened!
- When choosing a helmet for a child, it is worth paying attention to whether it will provide protection for the back of the head in the event of a backward fall.
- No helmet is suitable for further use after an accident!
- Helmets for girls and boys do not differ in design.
- Before riding, check your child's helmet for signs of damage.
